The Super 70 Series 2+2 was intended to be the flagship for International Harvester. The 2+2 design was an innovation that the IH leadership team had come to believe in. Like the original Farmall, the 2+2 worked well but the odd looks made it hard for some to accept. The original 2+2 was introduced in 1979, and the updated Super 70 Series consisted of two tractors: the 7288 and 7488. Both used the DTI-466C turbocharged and intercooled six-cylinder engines, with the 7288 rated for 210 horsepower and the 7488 rated for 235. In January 1985, a pre-production run of 36 model 7288 tractors was authorized. The tractor was going to appear on the cover of the 1985 International Harvester Buyer’s Guide. When the sale to Tenneco became official, the J.I. Case and IH tractor lines were consolidated and the decision was made to cancel production of the 7288 and 7488. Only 19 International 7288s were built. This one was purchased in 1985 with only 72 hours on the clock by owners Darius and Dirk Harms of St. Joseph, Illinois. The tractor was put to work on the family farm, and still works for a living on occasion.
